How to download videos from any site (the clean way)

The downloader world is full of fake buttons, extension malware and APK sideloads. You need none of it. Here is the one flow that works across every major platform — and how to spot the tools you should not touch.

The three-step flow

Copy the public share link
Every platform has one: YouTube’s Share button, Instagram’s “Copy link”, TikTok’s share arrow, the timestamp menu on X, Facebook’s share menu, Reddit’s share button. If a post is public, its link works.
Paste it into a browser-based downloader
Like Simple Video Downloader — then pick your quality (or switch to audio-only MP3).
Press download
When the real file is ready.

That is the entire process — on desktop and on your phone, with nothing installed.

What to avoid, and why

Browser extensions

Extensions that promise in-page download buttons routinely turn into adware after an ownership change — the extension has permission to read every page you visit.

Random APKs

These are the highest-risk software most people ever install; if a site pushes you to install an app just to download a video, leave.

Sites with fake download buttons

Where the first three “Download” buttons are ads, the site is monetising your misclicks; a legitimate tool shows exactly one button, and only when a real file exists.

Platform quirks worth knowing

YouTubeServes video and audio separately at higher resolutions — a proper tool merges them server-side (more on that here).

RedditDoes the same, which is why naive downloads come back silent.

Instagram and FacebookOnly expose public posts — private accounts, Stories and friends-only videos are not downloadable without credentials, and any tool claiming otherwise should scare you.

TikTokShare links (vm.tiktok.com) redirect to the real post; good tools resolve them automatically.

XConverts GIFs to video, so “GIF” posts download as MP4.

Quality: what you can actually get

A downloader can never exceed what the platform stores. If the upload was 720p, no tool on earth produces a real 1080p file. Set the quality you want as a ceiling, and expect the source to decide.
